Military training on campus became popular and then mandatory. The Second World War marked the first provision of federal money to the university for research purposes. This laid the groundwork for future research grants from the Canadian federal government. Specifically, from 2005 to 2012, the Okanagan campus completed a $450 million CDN extension with the construction of several residential, teaching and research buildings. The expansion included the Charles E. Fipke Centre for Innovative Research, the University Centre, the Engineering Management and Education Building, the Arts and Sciences Centre, the Reichwald Health Sciences Centre and several new university residences. The Commons building was opened in 2019, and in 2020 it will be built in two other university residences, the Nechako and Skeena residences.
